The Power of Rest: A Journey of Healing and Renewal
Dawn Cannon | JAN 9, 2025

As I look back on the past year, I am struck by how much it mirrored the natural rhythms of the seasons. Just as winter calls the earth to rest and restore, I answered a similar call at the end of 2023. After stepping away from a fast-paced executive career, I made a promise to myself: one year of intentional rest.
It was a decision born from both courage and necessity. My soul had been whispering for some time that the constant push to achieve, succeed, and do wasn’t sustainable. What began as a whisper grew louder, and eventually, I knew it was time to pause, to heal, and to realign with my values.
At first, rest didn’t come easily. For years, I had tied my sense of self-worth to productivity, believing that my value lay in what I could accomplish. Slowing down felt uncomfortable—like a muscle I hadn’t used in far too long. But as I leaned into rest, I began to see its profound gifts.
Rest is more than a pause from activity; it is a state of being. It’s a time for the body, mind, and spirit to restore, recalibrate, and reconnect.
In our culture of constant busyness, rest often gets overshadowed by the demand to "do more" and "be more." But without rest, we deplete our inner resources. Just as the earth needs winter to nourish its soil, we too need rest to recharge and grow.
The benefits of rest are undeniable:
Rest isn’t just about sleeping in or taking a day off; it’s about creating space to nurture yourself on every level. Here are some key elements:
Rest doesn’t have to mean a full year of stillness. It can begin with small, intentional steps. Here are some ideas to help you start:
As my year of rest came to a close, I felt a shift within. From the stillness emerged a deeper connection to my inner voice—a voice that now guides me with clarity and purpose. This past year has taught me that rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s from this grounded place that I now step forward, ready to embrace life with balance, authenticity, and intention.
Rest is an invitation to come home to yourself. Whether you are in a season of striving or stillness, I encourage you to listen to what your body and spirit need. Begin where you are, and trust that rest will guide you toward transformation.
What does rest look like for you? How might you begin to create space for rest in your life? Share your thoughts in the comments—I’d love to hear from you.
